The Haudenosaunee Wildlife and Habitat Authority and Hamilton Conservation Authority have agreed to a few terms for this year's deer harvest.
Participants will be able to hunt in two areas of the Dundas Valley Conservation Area on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays only between November 12 and December 6th.
The number of harvested deer is capped at 60.
While the hunt is protected under treaty agreements, every year the harvest brings out protesters who oppose the methods used during this hunt, or just hunting in general.
Via a release Paul Williams of the Haudenosaunee Wildlife and Habitat Authority says, "We're confident that we have been able to find a place where it is safe for our hunters to go; where we can exercise legal traditional rights carefully. And we're grateful that we are able to work with partners who share our ecological values. Of course we intend to conduct the harvest safely, humanely, and consistent with best conservation practices. And the deer taken will go to longhouses for ceremonies and to elders, as well as to feed hunters' families."
