Niagara's Regional Chair says the Ministry of Transportation 'wisely' listened to regional officials' concerns over one-way traffic through the Thorold Tunnel.
Jim Bradley says Ministry officials were flexible with options to keep the Tunnel moving over the winter months by agreeing to bring in smaller plows to clear the tunnel after a snowfall.
The MTO was planning on having just one-way traffic through the tunnel for the winter months due to safety concerns since the barrier separating the lanes would not allow a traditional plow to move through the tunnel.
Following a meeting with Ministry officials, the MTO agreed to provide the equipment, resources, and personnel to clear the tunnel of snow using the smaller plows.
Bradley says while the tunnel may need to be closed periodically to clear major snowfalls, proper signage will be put up.
He says the Ministry had five different options, and the best one was chosen.
Bradley says the Ministry could have imposed their will, but they listened to local officials, and made a wise decision.
