The CEO of the long-term care home, where Niagara's first patient diagnosed with COVID-19 was living, thinks the situation is under control.
An 84 yr old man who lives at Ina Grafton Gage Village on Linwell Rd. in the north end of St. Catharines was taken to St. Catharines hospital with an unrelated medical issue on Tuesday March 10th.
The man, who lives in an assisted-living apartment at the facility, tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday.
CEO of Ina Grafton Gage Village, Pat O'Neill tells CKTB eight staff members who came into contact with the man are now in self-isolation for 14 days.
He says all doors at the centre are closed to the public, and if visitors want to come into the facility, they will be screened at one entrance.
400 seniors live at the 15 acre property.
He says residents are handling the situation ok, and they are cleaning common areas constantly.
The patients' room has also been disinfected.
Although the man himself had not travelled recently, a relative returned from Portugal.
The man is in stable condition in an isolated room at St. Catharines hospital.
The relative, the paramedics, and medical professionals who cared for the man are in self-isolation.
Public Health says the risk in Niagara remains low, and there was no known exposure at the hospital other than the health care providers.
