Some encouraging news if you decided to get your flu shot this year.
Canadian researchers say this season's flu vaccine is capable of reducing the risk of infection by 72 per cent, making it much more effective than last year's shot, which only protected one in five of those who received it.
The lead researcher from the BC Centre for Disease Control says that level of protection against H1N1 was seen across all age groups, including children.
Young children have been especially vulnerable to H1N1 this season.
At least seven children under age 10 have died from complications of influenza as of January 12th.
The Niagara Region is currently dealing with two influenza outbreaks.
While most cases of the flu are not lab confirmed the region has a total of 56 new cases of influenza A this week alone.
Kathy Bell, Manager of Infectious Disease tells CKTB there have been over 380 confirmed cases since October.
