The 2021 Canada Summer Games are coming soon and a Thorold city councillor is concerned about infrastructure in his community.
Councillor Jim Handley telling Niagara in the Morning a facility for the games was to be built to house some indoor events, but he says the federal and provincial government's haven't come through with their funding commitments. "We are looking for funding from the provincial government and nothing has been written in stone yet but we as a municipality don't want to see the municipality funding it as a whole"
However, 2021 Games Marketing Officer Steve Katzman says the games committee secured base funding from all three levels of government when the bid was put in and subsequently won.
He adds if additional funding doesn't come through, no local municipality will be on the hook to build new facilities as the games can be hosted with the current infrastructure in place.
The 2021 games are expected to provide an economic benefit of 200 million dollars to the Niagara Region.
