More student housing could be coming to Thorold, but it will mean the loss of a hotel.
An application to amend zoning by-laws governing the site of Four Points Sheraton has been submitted to Thorold council. The hope is to change the by-law to include "purpose built apartment" as a permitted use to allow the hotel to convert to student housing.
The plan discussed at last night's meeting allows for a maximum of 162 apartments, accounting for about 305 student beds in all.
No objections have been brought forth at this time, but councillors are weighing their options. Mayor Ted Luciani told Post Media he understands the millions of dollars needed to maintain the hotel at its current rating is likely driving this proposal, but he hopes another hotel could be in place before the Canada 2021 Summer Games if this plan moves forward.
