Thorold's mayor says the city is looking for a "more feasible solution " after it was learned the Ministry of Transportation is ending two-way traffic in the Thorold tunnel.
After Mondays storm, the MTO realized two way traffic in the north tube is a safety hazard and has decided to make the tunnel one way..
It means vehicles travelling west to Thorold and St. Catharines will still be able to use the tunnel.
However, vehicles heading eastbound to Niagara Falls would have to find an alternate route.
Mayor Terry Ugilini tells CKTB's Matt Holmes he and the regional chair have sent a letter to the transportation minister asking for a meeting to work out another plan.
Ugilini says a better solution would be to close the tunnel for a short period of time when there's a snow event rather than one-way traffic all winter.
He says the MTO's plan is a "traffic nightmare" and affects the entire Niagara Region.
