Close to 15,000 people have signed a Change.org petition asking the provincial government to fund a drug for a 31 year old St. Catharines man.
The petition explains that Jared Wayland was diagnosed with Type 3 spinal muscular atrophy when he was 13.
But there is a new drug called Spinraza that has been proven to dramatically offset the effects of SMA.
However the petition explains it "is one of the most expensive drugs on the planet, with a price of around $708,000 for the first year of treatment and $345,000 annually after that."
The province recently announced it would fund access to Spinraza for children up to 18 years of age, but that does nothing to help Jared and other adults living with SMA.
Jared's cousin, who launched the petition, is asking people to sign it to try and convince the Ford government to remove the age restriction on Spinraza funding "to give everyone with SMA a fighting chance at life."
