Toronto city council will be asked to approve a move to make masks mandatory.
Mayor John Tory announced the plan to make face coverings mandatory in all public indoor spaces to combat the spread of COVID-19.
If council gives the necessary approval, the order will come into effect a week from today.
Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown has also announced plans to make masks mandatory in public spaces in the Peel region.
Mayors from the GTHA have asked the provincial government to take similar steps, but so far Premier Doug Ford has not done so.
Locally, St. Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik recently said he thinks masks should have been mandatory in public spaces when Niagara moved into phase two of the province's recovery plan.
