Ontario's new Tory government has cancelled a $100-million fund earmarked for school repairs this year.
The cut comes as a result of the cancellation of the province's cap-and-trade program which paid for the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund for the schools.
School boards were notified of the cut by the government in a memo on July 3, saying that any work contracted on or before that date would be paid for but moving forward the fund
was closed.
Premier Doug Ford campaigned on a promise to eliminate cap-and-trade and made it one of his first acts after he was sworn in on June 29.
Critics have panned the move, saying it will force school boards to cut back on repairs and prioritize only the most urgent projects.
The province has an approximate $15 billion repair backlog at its 4,900 publicly funded schools.
