A scary incident for a Niagara-on-the-Lake woman as a fearless coyote tried to attack her small dog.
The woman was walking in the area of John Street West and Gate Street on Sunday.
The bold coyote started following the woman, and her dog, and eventually started lunging at the woman trying to take the dog from her.
A man, driving by, noticed what was happening and jumped out of his truck to help.
Tim Bala, owner of Paddle Niagara, joined CKTB's Tom McConnell, saying he noticed the animal stalking the woman, and starting honking his horn.
He then pulled over and ran over to get between the coyote and the woman, scaring the animal away.
He says coyote sightings are common in the area, and he's even heard of one following a child walking home from school.
The town will host a virtual information session tomorrow night ( April 27 at 6 p.m.) featuring representatives from Coyote Watch Canada, the Lincoln County Humane Society, Niagara Regional Police Service, and other agencies.
Executive Director of the LCHS Kevin Strooband, says coyote attacks are very very rare, and in this case the animal was protecting its food source in the area by getting rid of any threat.
Strooband says the food source in Niagara-on-the-Lake is from people who leave out food for birds, cats and other wildlife.
He says if residents clean up their properties, these close calls with coyotes will most likely go away.
