Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard have announced an 11-kilometre rail bypass for Lac-Megantic, Quebec.
It was five years ago the community was devastated when a train carrying crude oil derailed and exploded in centre of the small town, destroying business and homes and killing 47 people.
The issue, meantime, is being discussed locally in Niagara Falls, where politicians are fighting to get CN Railway tracks moved out of the city centre.
In an interview with the Toronto Star, Mayor Jim Diodati says he thinks if all the mayors and all the politicians from coast to coast, rise up and share their concerns it will force action on the issue of train safety in city centres.
The city has launched a study of the impact of trains on the transportation network, emergency service response, residents, businesses / commerce, environment and safety.
Residents are also invited weigh in on the debate by taking an online survey on the city's website at https://niagarafalls.ca
