A transgender woman in BC has won a battle to serve the rest of her murder sentence in a women's facility.
Jennifer Metcalfe of the West Coast Prison Justice Society says Fallon AubeeĀ is one of the first federal inmates allowed to relocate based on gender identity.
Metcalfe says the move is possible thanks to recent policy changes at Correctional Service Canada.
"It's a really big deal. I've had a number of transgender women prisoners, clients who have been held in men's prisons and they've faced a lot of day to day discrimination including name calling and harassment by both correctional staff and other prisoners. They're also particularly vulnerable to sexual assaults living as women in men's prisons."
Aubee was convicted in 2003 for a gang-related killing in Saskatchewan, after confessing as part of a police sting.
