Trees are a hot topic in St.Catharines and some decisions were made last night.
A proposal came before council dealing with trees on private property.
St.Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik says council approved some key elements of the proposal such as approving the protection of woodlots, and helping city residents remove dead or diseased trees from their property.
Sendzik says a rebate program will be launched to help residents who can't afford the cost of removing a large dead, or diseased tree.
Other more controversial parts of the proposed private property tree bylaw were not voted on and will be send to the Green City Committee for further review.
Some citizens were upset over parts of the proposed bylaw which required residents to get a permit from the city before cutting down a tree on their own property.
Sendzik is also reminding St.Catharines residents not to touch trees on city-owned property since you can be fined 'a lot of money.'
