Truckloads of dirt are being dumped in West Lincoln in exhange for cash, and officials with the township are warning property owners to be careful.
Developers in cities like Toronto are paying some farmers in the township about $50 bucks per truckload to dispose of the unwanted earth on their property.
According to Director of Planning and Building with the Township of West Lincoln Brian Treble, farmers risk violating by-laws and may suffer serious financial liabilities if the soil is contaminated.
Treble says the conflict lies in the fact that by-laws indicate the land is strictly for agricultural purposes and is not meant to be a dumping ground.
Treble went on to say he thinks some farmers will have a difficult time passing off 500 truckloads of new dirt as a legitimate agricultural necessity.
The township will be holding an open house on August 13th from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The idea is to meet with farmers and property owners, communicate what the rules areĀ and get the word out that township will not become a dumping ground.
