No word on how this will impact Hamilton's former Stelco operations but President Donald Trump is again promising to tax steel imports, less than a week after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he believed Canada would escape expected steel tariffs imposed by the Americans.
Speaking to reporters as he flew to France, Trump said there are two ways to address what he calls unacceptable dumping of foreign steel into the U-S market, quotas and tariffs, and suggested that maybe he'll do both.
Trump added that China and other countries have been dumping steel on the US for decades and destroying its steel industry.
Seventeen per cent of all steel exports to the United States is from Canada.
Steel, along with softwood lumber and NAFTA, are set to be on the agenda today when Trudeau meets with Vice President Mike Pence at the annual governor's meeting in Rhode Island.
