A new report has found an outbreak of raccoon rabies in the Hamilton area was most likely started by a raccoon that hitched a ride from south of the border.
The multi agency report says it appears the virus was introduced after a long distance translocation of a diseased raccoon either by ship or transport truck.
Hamilton public health, meantime, is continuing with a public awareness campaign to stop the disease from spreading into neighbouring regions.
The campaign asks " You may be transporting more than you think. Did you know raccoons are great hitch hikers?"
But the good news, the spread of the virus seems to be slowing down, there have been only 25 reported cases of raccoon rabies so far this year in the Hamilton area compared to 65 the year before.
