The University of Guelph student union is in the middle of a social media firestorm over a Lou Reed song.
The Student Union took to Twitter earlier this month to apologize for playing Walk on the Wild Side at a campus event.
Student leaders say the person who selected the song list had no idea the classic rock anthem was transphobic.
At issue the line, “Holly came from Miami F.L.A. . . . Plucked her eyebrows on the way, shaved her legs and then he was a she. She said, ‘Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side.’”
Fans of Lou Reed coming to the late singers defense.
His producer telling the Guardian “The song was a love song to all the people he knew and to New York City by a man who supported the community and the city his whole life.”
