The man at the centre of an investigation involving a police shooting on New Year's Eve in St. Catharines has died.
The province's special investigation unit has identified 56 year old Fred Penner as the man involved in the incident Tuesday afternoon on Rykert Street.
NRP were called to the area Tuesday afternoon after reports of a man with a knife.
The SIU says there was some of interactiom between the man and police which resulted in both officers discharging their firearms and the man being struck multiple times.
Penner died yesterday afternoon and a post-mortem was conducted this morning.
In a news release, the SIU says five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to this investigation.
The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529.
The Unit is also urging anyone who may have any video evidence related to this incident to upload that video through the SIU website.
