Niagara police say a passing ship contacted Seaway officials when they saw a body in the water in the area between Lincoln Street and Main Street.
Police, Niagara EMS and Welland Fire and Emergency Service responded around 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning.
The body was recovered by the NRPS marine unit with help from Welland EMS.
Police are working with the coroner to determine the indentity of the body.
The gender and approximate age of the deceased are being withheld until the completion of a post mortem tomorrow.
