The landlord of a home in Port Colborne that was the scene of a fatal blaze in December is facing charges.
Yesterday, the Ontario Fire Marshall released the cause of the fire at the home on Nickel Street that claimed the life of four members of a family.
The cause was ruled to be "accidental from a misused ignition source equpment improperly discharged."
This morning during an interview with CKTB morning host Tim Denis, Port Colborne Fire Chief Tom Cartwright revealed the owner of the home, from the Dunnville area, have been charged with a number of counts under the Ontario Fire Code.
Cartwright says they all related to smoke alarms and maintenance of smoke alarms.
The Chief adds the fire marshall found no signs of smoke alarms in the building and when fire crews arrived about four minutes after the fire broke out, they heard no alarms sounding.
Cartwright since the blaze they have found only about 30% of residences in the city have working smoke alarms.
He notes the Office of the Fire Marshall has indicated that is the norm across the province.
