MPPs are taking a break for a few hours after burning the midnight oil in a rare overnight session, all part of the effort to pass a contrvoersial bill cutting the size of Toronto city council.
The Ontario government cited the need for urgent action in justifying the late-night sitting, saying quick passage of the bill would eliminate any uncertainty surrounding the October 22nd municipal vote.
Scores of protesters greeted MPP's early this morning and they were also vocal inside the legislature, heckling Progressive Conservative lawmakers with cries of ``shame, shame,'' prompting the Speaker to order the public galleries cleared.
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath left the debate to address the crowd, telling them she was proud to see so many people rally to defend charter rights at such an unusual time.
THe legislature will reconvene at 10:30 this morning.
