Niagara police were called to the Burgoyne Bridge in St. Catharines this morning at 6:15 a.m. for a welfare check.
Shortly afterwards, the bridge and southbound lanes of the 406 were closed for a sudden death investigation.
Because there was an interaction between a police officer and the deceased, the Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate.
The traffic closures are anticipated to remain in place throughout most of the morning hours.
