Ontario's police watchdog says two elderly people are dead after a police-involved shooting at a hospital in Cobourg, about 100 kilometres east of Toronto.
The Special Investigations Unit is investigating the death of a 70-year-old man and provincial police are investigating the death of a 76-year-old woman at Northumberland Hills Hospital.
The S-I-U says the couple was in a room together, and that emergency room staff heard a gunshot and found the woman with a head wound. Police responded, shots were fired and the man died at the scene.
The hospital was placed in a lockdown after the shooting. Guards were posted at the emergency room entrance to prevent others from entering. Non-critical condition patients were being told to go to other hospitals.
Hospital president and C-E-O Linda Davis says the training her staff has received to deal with this kind of emergency situation was on full display Friday night..
"While we hope that we never need to use this training, it proved very beneficial tonight. I want to thank our staff and our local police services for their fast and professional response."
