While the opposition Conservatives and NDP take the governing Liberals to task for NAFTA 2.0, there is something online shoppers will be applauding.
Under the trade deal, Canada has agreed to increase the so called de minimis threshold for duty free shopping from $20 to $150 dollars.
Ottawa has also agreed to raise the amount you can buy online from a U.S company before sales tax is imposed.
So if you order from an American company online, you won't be charged duty for purchases under $150, but anything over $40 you will be charged the HST.
However, it does not apply to shoppers who physically travel to the U.S. and make cross-border purchases.
Canadian shoppers who stay in the U.S.for 24 hours already receive a duty-free exemption on $200.
