A group of volunteers are wading in to help test the waters around Niagara.
As part of a joint initiative between Niagara College, the Niagara Coastal Community Collaborative, and the organization known as Swim Drink Fish are collecting water samples from Lake Erie.
The samples come from areas popular for swimming, boating, and ceremonial activities and are then analyzed at the college's Niagara-On-The-Lake campus.
Funding for the project comes through Environment and Climate Change Canada's Great Lakes Protection Initiative meant to help collect data for underserved communities.
Niagara Public Health also conducts regular water quality testing at many of Niagara's beaches.
As of this morning, Public Health lists six beaches as unsafe for swimming - Waverly Beach in Fort Erie, Nelles Beach in Grimsby, Charles Daley Park East in Lincoln, Humberstone Centennial Park Beach in Port Colborne, Sherkston Wyldewood Beach in Port Colborne, and Lakeside Beach in St. Catharines.
