Politicians in Wainfleet are attempting to pump the brakes on cannabis greenhouses.
During this week's meeting, council gave staff the green light to develop an interim control bylaw prohibiting all cannabis development for one year while staff look at beefing up the bylaws.
Mayor Kevin Gibson says right now medical cannabis growers are not following any rules, "So far they are not doing anything. They are not even coming to get a licence."
Gibson adds the current bylaws are doing nothing to deter the companies, "There is no teeth to the by-law to make them come and do what they have to do. When you are dealing with billion dollar products and you get a $2,000 fine that's nothing."
There will also be a town hall meeting on the issue on March 25th to learn how the residents feel.
