The Ministry of Labour has slapped a Welland steel pipe and tube manufacturer with a $120,000 fine after a worker was critically injured by a one tonne steel pipe.
Welded Tube of Canada has entered a guilty plea following the incident at the Ridge Road facility in early May of last year.
An investigation by the Ministry determined a metal pipe became stuck on a transfer table, but when the worker went to resolve the issue, a fellow employee was unable to understand a message due to poor quality radios.
The machine was turned on again while the worker was still between the transfer tables, and the pipe landed on them.
EMS was called to remove the pipe and the worker was taken to hospital.
The Ministry also discovered some employees did not know how to properly use the radios.
