A Welland councillor is calling on the Niagara Region to take a closer look at emergency housing in Welland.
Councillor Bryan Green put forward a motion because currently all emergency beds are located outside the city.
"All these different issues are inter-connected. I think a missing piece for at least Welland and Southern Niagara, if you're in Port Colbrone for example, you have to travel a signifcant distance for any kind of emergency housing."
Green says in the past council has been told emergency housing programs should go through the region.
"Let's be united as a council to call on the region to look at Welland." He says, "I would be supportive of Welland investing some funds - we can't just say it's a regional resposibility, there's no need for Welland to be involved. But at the end of the day, I'm a councillor in Welland and my job is to fight for people in Welland. So if we need to invest some funds and support the region and other groups looking to serve the community needs, its something we need to look at."
His motion asking the Region to take a look at a year round local shelter or a seasonal out of the cold program recieved full support.
