$3.7 million up in smoke.
As Welland Fire Services looks back at 2017, they noticed the dollar figure attached to fire losses is up $2 million from the year before.
Much of that can be attributed to three significant incidents - a Main Street business, an apartment on King street, and a Montgomery road home.
Welland Fire also reports an overall increase of 119 more calls in 2017 than the previous year.
In total, six people were injured by fire last year.
There is some good news though - Deputy Fire Chief Adam Eckhart says in at least two incidents, working smoke alarms helped save lives.
