The city of Welland hit a new record when it comes to new housing units being constructed.
City officials say according to data from their building and planning departments, the Rose City experienced another year of robust development activity in 2019, with 472 new units going up and almost 800 building permits issued.
Mayor Frank Campion says the housing growth is bringing new residents to the city, supporting the local economy, and creating jobs in the skilled trades and construction industry.
He says Council will continue to make investments in infrastructure and amenities for current residents, and to help attract new residents.
Welland’s population is just over 52,000 based on the 2016 Canadian Census data.
The city’s population forecast is projected to grow by 18,000 by 2041.
City staff estimate the city’s 2020 Building Permit Activity and Residential Growth will be similar to 2019, provided economic conditions remain comparable.
