Welland's mayor highlighted work on roads, sidewalks, and a veteran's memorial during his annual year in review fundraiser.
While looking back at 2018, Mayor Frank Campion commended staff for more than $8.5 million in infrastructure renewal last year as well as the completion of the Veteran's Memorial section at Woodlawn Cemetery.
Last year, the Rose City boasted a record setting number of building permits, and sold $9.2 million in city owned land.
Campion tells CKTB's Tim Denis, selling that land is about more than making money.
"It's more important for us to sell the land to the right people. We're going to convert them into tax-paying property through residential or employment lands with creating jobs. Both those things are happening. The important part is not the money that's generated, because that will just get reinvested into developing more land for employment and servicing land for employment, commercial, and residential use."
Campion also praised efforts to attract Northern Gold Foods, who have recently expanded their facility in Welland by about 75% according to the mayor.
"They put one line in and they had just finished the first line and got into production when they decided they needed another line and we were very happy that we could attract them to stay here. They were looking internationally for location, and when they looked at what we had here, they said, 'Let's expand this one.'"
