A West Lincoln councillor wants the township to hold a special meeting to ensure the Pride flag will fly this month.
Councillor for Ward 3, William Reilly, tells CKTB he feels like councillors need to speak out and fix a situation that could have been easily prevented.
Reilly says while he understands the pandemic has caused a lot of chaos, but it's time to rectify the situation.
West Lincoln is the only municipality in Niagara to not fly the Pride flag.
Mayor Dave Bylsma tells CKTB there are procedures for flag raisings and the issue would of had to go to council a month prior to the event.
Pride Niagara said they did email the township, but there was a miscommunication. Read more on that here.
Reilly has now sent a letter to the Mayor asking for a special council meeting to fast track the flag raising.
He has yet to hear back from the Mayor.
He says 'In my opinion, there shouldn't be any reason for this to not proceed this month. I believe our community does a pretty great job recognizing everyone. The importance of this flag goes beyond the simplicity of just physically raising the flag. It continues to advocate for inclusively, diversity, and equality to members of the public that haven't always been treated fairly or equally. Who may have or in some situations currently experience abuse, and alienation from society. We celebrated the flag raisings of both JAAC and Age-Friendly, so it's my opinion that our Pride flag should have it's chance to be raised and proudly celebrated as well. "
