The mayor of West Lincoln is warning residents that making deals with developers could end up costing them in the long run.
Mayor Dave Byslma tells CKTB's Tim Denis West Lincoln staff are trying to deal with an influx of dirt shipped into the municipality from developers in neighbouring cities.
"It's too expensive to landfill, it makes quick work of a landfill, so if they can find farms in rural communities to dump it on... Residents are receiving money, so this is actually a transaction, which we take issue with."
Bylsma says all that dirt can have consequences for our waterways.
"We have a situation where many, many, many loads - maybe 5, maybe north of 500 loads came in, and they started to fill in a ravine and very quickly that starts to change flood plains."
He points out residents could be on the hook for the cost of remediation if the dirt causes problems.
He also says at a certain point, the dumping crosses the threshold into 'site alteration' at which time municipal staff may ask for proof that the dirt contains only clean fill and demand to know where the dirt is coming from.
