It was a rare event but a testament to how powerful the winds were yesterday.
Provincial police closed the Burlington Skyway and the Garden City Skyway yesterday due to the high winds.
Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the closures of the bridges came after the wind toppled a transport truck on the Burlington Skyway.
The Burlington Skyway reopened to traffic after a closure of about five hours, while the Garden City Skyway was closed for about an hour.
Schmidt says the trailer was empty and the driver and his co-driver were not seriously injured.
The driver told police that the wind caught the back of the trailer he was hauling and ``rolled it over like a wave.''
Winds in parts of Niagara and Hamilton hit speeds of up to 115 kmh an hour yesterday.
