Toronto police say an elderly woman has died after allegedly being pushed to the ground by a man while walking near a busy downtown intersection.
Police say a woman in her 70s or 80s was walking by herself just north of Yonge Street and King Street around 11:40 a.m. when she was allegedly pushed to the ground, seriously injuring her face and head.
Acting Insp. Craig Young says a man in his 30s fled the area but has since been arrested and will be charged with aggravated assault.
Young says an autopsy will be conducted to confirm what exactly caused the woman's death and he notes that the charge against the man could be upgraded.
Police say they are looking to speak to witnesses about what happened at the intersection, which is located in Toronto's financial district.
The alleged assault took place outside a fast food restaurant and blood could be seen on the sidewalk outside.
