Officials in the snow clearing industry are sounding the alarm forecasting a shortage because of late season storms and a three month summer strike at the world's largest salt mine in Goderich.
In a bulletin to members, Landscape Ontario says private contractors and small retailers are scrambling to find new sources of the salt.
Members are advised they may have buy imported rock salt which will drive up costs.
Municipalities should be okay, they typically are on the top of the list to receive shipments from suppliers.
The website smartaboutsalt.com recommends homeowners try more environmentally friendly options like sand and kitty litter.
